How Does a Cold Reinforcing Bar Affect Fresh Concrete?

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 306 has warned for a long time about the effect cold surfaces have on fresh concrete, though recommendations have changed over the years. A recent study has shown that many of the recommendations may be unnecessary. The study tested warm fresh concrete with reinforcing bars that had been cooled to -5° Fahrenheit. Results varied by the size of the reinforcing bar. Smaller bars were quickly heated by the concrete, while larger bars reached an equilibrium temperature more slowly.
