Innovative Approach to Safety Criteria of Roundabouts

Inovativni pristup sigurnosnim kriterijima na kruznim raskrizjima

The construction of roundabouts has been lately becoming a challenge to designers, and their construction has been improving the basic tasks of the entire transport system. Certainly, all traffic participants want a safer and quicker way to arrive to the desired location, while on the other side it is the task of the planners and designers to ensure and provide that objective. The idea of roundabouts originates from 1903, when Eugene Hénard proposed circular traffic as a solution to problems of heavy traffic in the centers of large cities, and the first practical use of a roundabout was a circular hub “Columbus Circle” located at William Phelps Eno in New York in 1905. The implementation and introduction of roundabouts is most complex in urban areas, where very often there is lack of spatial capacities and the construction is adapted to the existing state without compliance to the legal provisions and standards for construction. The aim of this paper is to contribute to all those involved in planning and designing of traffic and primarily the persons to whom the circular intersections represent the object of study and interest. The goal for everyone is efficient and safe flow of traffic, but the construction of roundabouts in addition to all its benefits must be done in accordance with regulations and standards, where the earlier experiences of countries that have recognized this and have built a lot of roundabouts should certainly be used.
