HDM-4: an innovative tool for prediction of pavement performance and maintenance decision

Highway agencies around the world have changed their attention from design and construction of new pavements to maintenance of existing pavements. Pavements must be selected for maintenance when they are still good/effective and before the need becomes apparent to the users/casual observers in order to avoid their rapid deterioration after a certain limit. The main objectives of this study are to present pavement maintenance practices/trends in India, predict the performance of flexible pavement using eight deterioration models in highway development and management (HDM-4) tools, and provide appropriate maintenance at the appropriate time based on the performance prediction using pavement deterioration model of HDM-4. HDM-4 software, which is user friendly software, has been used for predicting pavement performance and also to decide appropriate maintenance treatments to be applied at the appropriate time. Analysis for prediction of performance has been carried out for the road section, located in Darbhanga region, Road Construction Department Bihar. Only cracking and roughness are found to be critical out of eight deterioration parameters in HDM-4 for the analysis period of 15 years. As a result, condition-responsive maintenance has been carried out using HDM-4. The condition of pavement becomes equivalent to the new one after maintenance.
