Calculation of Savings of Greenhouse Gases During Life Cycle of Biofuels: Methodology of Research Results Aapplication

Vypocty uspor emisi sklenikovych plynu behem zivotniho cyklu biopaliv: Metodika uplatneni vysledku vyzkumu

Regarding the global reduction of impacts on the environment, a system of certification of biofuels was produced, which is to ensure their sustainable production. It is currently the most elaborate sustainability system worldwide, which is usable both for biofuels produced in EU, and for biofuels imported from countries outside of EU. Only those biofuels can be certified that meet the sustainability criteria set by directives of the European parliament and the Council (Directive 2009/28/ES, promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, and Directive 2009/30/ES, on fuel quality). The methodology is related to the calculation of greenhouse gases emissions within the whole life cycle of production of biofuels and bioliquids and complies with the mentioned directives and government decree No. 446/2011 Coll., on criteria of sustainability of biofuels. The methodology was produced as an outcome of an R&D project No. SPII4i1/33/07, whose objective was to produce conception material which would environmentally and economically evaluated the use of fossil motor fuels in transport. The tool for the evaluation of fuels was selected the analysis of the whole life cycle of production of biofuels, the so-called LCA analysis. Since the legislation process in EU in the field of biofuels has been accelerated, directives 2009/28/ES and 2009/30/ES, which were integrated in this methodology, as well as procedures defined by these directives, has become effective. Furthermore, the methodology reflects real conditions of the Czech Republic including climatic characteristic, social and economic conditions, agricultural and technological effectiveness of individual processes.
