Open for business

The ILA show is Germany's opportunity to showcase its industry. In this special package, we assess what makes the country's aerospace sector tick and analyse some of its successes. We visit two Airbus Group units--Airbus Helicopters and Premium Aerotec--and ask what effect defence budget cut and corporate reorganisation will have on its operations in Germany. We also look at how the armed forces are preparing for the A400M and find out why Germany's "NASA" is unique in the R&D world. Home advantage : for the past two years, stakeholders in Europe's aerospace champion have been riding waves of strategic restructuring. The shape of the company formerly known as EADS is coming into focus, but the ramifications for its stature in Germany remain to be seen / Dan Thisdell -- Germany's NASA : the DLR has a wide remit across transportation technology and, as its chairman sees it, a crucial role in supporting the fourth stage of the industrial revolution / Dan Thisdell -- Rosetta poised to unlock comet's secrets -- Berlin airlifter : with its first A400M "Atlas" now in final assembly, the German air force is getting ready to welcome its Transall replacement / Craig Hoyle -- Restructuring : hived off at arm's length from Airbus in 2009, aerostructures firm Premium Aerotec is Germany's biggest aerospace company by workforce. Although still huigely dependent on its parent for revenues, the Bavarian-based business is changing the way it works / Murdo Morrison -- Blade in Germany : Airbus Helicopters' Donauworth factory does not assemble the range of products its sister plant in France does, but its flagship EC135 and latest version of the EC145 are strong performers in the civil rotorcraft market / Dominic Perry -- Berlin calling : the appeearance of the A350, an array of German and US military hardware and the best of Turkey' growing aerospace industry will be highlights of this year's ILA / Murdo Morrison.
