Resetting Public Opinion

This article describes an innovative public relations program being used in Santa Monica, California to garner public support support for the city's metered parking initiatives. The city has installed 6,000 single-space meters and 6,000 sensors, and each smart parking meter is linked to an underground sensor. Magnetic-based sensing technology can detect the presence or absence of a vehicle and communicate directly with the meter to transfer data using a cellular link in the meter. The system has a reset function and an anti-meter feeding function in addition to the ability to export real-time occupancy data to parking guidance devices. This initiative marks one of the largest successful deployments of meter sensors in the United States, and the author outlines principles for successful installation of such a system.
