TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SOIL SURVEY PRINCIPLES IN THE PRACTICE OF FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

The evidence of many years suggests that the principle of a coupled pedological soil type and foundation engineering practice is useful and may continue to be applied. Considerations of economy are well met by this approach which has already permitted at least 10,000 foundation assessments following the detailed study of only 33 soil types. However, recent knowledge expressed in terms of a more sophisticated type of soil mechanics behaviour suggests the wisdom of separate quantitative assessments of soil response in all circumstances in which an "abnormal" soil moisture regime might be anticipated.
