Severe Erosion Comprises Florida Road

Tropical Storm Debby caused major damage to roads and infrastructure due to severe erosion in June of 2012. St. Joe Road in Pasco County outside of Tampa, Florida was particularly hard hit. The article discusses how the use of turf reinforcement mat (TRM) was a good fit for this project because it is well suited for severe erosion control projects and would aid in supporting vegetation. The project was challenging because of several variables. The road had drastic elevation changes caused by previous erosion and the area that needed the most repair was located at one of the lowest points. It was also obvious that the adjacent stormwater system was designed to funnel water runnoff directly to this area. The engineers and consultants of the project called for a more permanent slope protection product with a better functioning drainage system for this reason.
