It is claimed that the automatic train operation system described in this article can replace at least one of the two men presently assigned to a train, i.e., a driver and a conductor. In addition, the headway of trains can be reduced to a minimum thereby increasing efficiency. Regardless of an individual driver's skill, the train can be halted at a station with a high rate of deceleration, thereby shortening the running time between stations. Training of crew can be simplified and, as a result, the related expenses can be reduced.
