Improved track component renewal and maintenance strategies achieved at Infrabel by rail profile and track geometry measurement data analysis

Based on the analysis of rail profile and track geometry measurement data collected by its rail standards (EM) 130 measurement car, a Belgian rail infrastructure manager has tried to improve its track component renewal and maintenance strategies. How this has led to the implementation of new rail and sleeper renewal strategies is the first focus of this article. Secondly, it takes a look at how the development of a newly defined target rail profile has resulted from some significant data that was collected. This could well be adopted in its rail maintenance strategy at some stage in the future, provided that the outcome of additional evaluations are satisfactory.
