Arctic communication challenges

The vast geographic distances and the economic importance of activities in remote areas like the Arctic demand new innovative radio-based solutions. There are numerous unsolved research challenges pertaining to (broadband) radio communication coverage and satellite navigation reliability throughout the large region composed of the Norwegian Exclusive Economic Zone and the Arctic waters. This paper outlines these challenges and the current situation, in addition to identifying future systems capable of mitigating the crucial lack of adequate electronic communications infrastructure in the High North.
