MAGNETIC SUSPENSION FOR HIGH SPEED TRAINS

THE APPLICATION OF SUPER-CONDUCTING MAGNETS FOR THE SUSPENSION AND GUIDANCE OF HIGH-SPEED VEHICLES IS REVIEWED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MAGLEV TRAIN FOR BOTH PASSENGERS AND FREIGHT WOULD BE A SENSIBLE ANSWER TO SOME OF BRITAIN'S INTERNAL TRANSPORT PROBLEMS. THE MORE OBVIOUS ADVANTAGES OF MAGNETIC SUSPENSION, AS COMPARED WITH AIR SUSPENSION INCLUDE A TRACK CLEARANCE OF SEVERAL INCHES, THE PASSIVE NATURE OF THE SUSPENSION, THE ABSENCE OF MOVING PARTS, AND DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL FOR SPEEDS CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN 300 MPH. /AUTHOR/
