TRANSPORT SERVICES FOR THE HANDICAPPED /IN SWEDISH/

IT IS SOMETIMES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR DISABLED PERSONS TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND A TAXI IS OFTEN TOO EXPENSIVE. THE TERM "DISABLED PERSONS" COVERS PERSONS IN WHEEL CHAIRS, BLIND OR DEAF PEOPLE, PERSONS WHO CANNOT USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT BECAUSE OF STIFFNESS IN THEIR LOWER LIMBS AND MENTALLY RETARDED PERSONS. TRANSPORT SERVICES HAVE TO BE ARRANGED FOR JOURNEYS TO HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS AND PLACE OF WORK, AND FOR PRIVATE JOURNEYS. EXPERIMENTS IN SWEDEN HAVE SHOWN THAT A TAXI IS THE MOST ADEQUATE MEANS OF TRANSPORT. IN BIG CITIES, SMALL BUSES WITH HYDRAULIC LIFTS CAN BE USED. EVEN IF SPECIAL TRANSPORT SERVICES ARE PROVIDED FOR THE DISABLED, AN ATTEMPT MUST STILL BE MADE TO CHANGE STANDARD PUBLIC TRANSPORT VEHICLES SO THAT THEY CAN BE USED BY DISABLED AND NORMAL RESIDENTS. /TRRL/
