Schools seek automated stop arm enforcement

There are laws in all US states making it illegal for motorists to pass a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Despite legislation across the country, this behavior persists, and bus drivers cite it as a major safety issue. A number of states have now issued legislation allowing stronger safety measures, such as automated school bus stop arm safety cameras. The cameras are capable of monitoring up to four lanes of traffic and are positioned on the bus to ensure the stop arm is visible and extended. Cameras are automatically activated when the bus driver deploys the stop arm. When drivers are aware that automated enforcement cameras are in use, they are less likely to violate the stop arm laws.
