A methodology to classify railway networks on the basis of their traffic composition and their economic profitability

In order to classify railway networks on the basis of their traffic composition and their economic profitability, a methodology is proposed, as presented in this article. The correlation between traffic composition and economic profitability is enabled to be shown by the application of the proposed methodology. Conclusions may then be drawn regarding traffic composition and its effect on the economic profitability of a respective railway network. With some adaptations, an application to railway corridors may also be made by the proposed methodology.
