ENGINEERING EDUCATION GOALS SET REALISTICALLY IN FINAL REPORT

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE FINAL REPORT ON GOALS OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION. THE REPORT RECOMMENDS THAT THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION AND ENGINEERING EDUCATORS RECOGNIZE THE INEVITABILITY OF INCREASED GRADUATE LEVEL EDUCATION IN THE FUTURE, AND TAKE WHATEVER STEPS ARE NECESSARY TO PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR AT LEAST ONE MORE YEAR OF GRADUATE STUDY FOR THE MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO WILL COMPLETE THEIR UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION DURING THE COMING DECADE. THE MOST IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS OF THIS REPORT ARE: (1) AN INCREASE IN FINANCIAL SUPPORT BY GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY FOR INTENSIFIED RESEARCH TO ADVANCE MORE RAPIDLY THE STORE OF KNOWLEDGE, (2) ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF HIGH- QUALITY, PART-TIME ADVANCED-DEGREE PROGRAMS, TOGETHER WITH NONDEGREE CONTINUING STUDIES, FOR EMPLOYEES OF INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT, (3) A FLEXIBLE PROGRAM DESIGNED TO DEVELOP ACCREDITATION PROCEDURES AND POLICIES THAT WILL CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE INNOVATION AND EXPERIMENTATION, (4) RECOGNITION OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, THE HUMANITIES, AND ESPECIALLY OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO RELATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN TERMS MORE READILY UNDERSTOOD AND APPRECIATED BY SOCIETY, AND (5) REDUCTION IN CREDIT-HOUR REQUIREMENTS TO MAKE BASIC ENGINEERING EDUCATION A GENERAL SCIENTIFIC-TECHNOLOGICAL ONE, WHILE ALLOWING MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY.
