The Big Spill

The Deepwater Horizon incident in 2010 was the largest oil spill disaster in US history. A series of explosions and fire onboard the mobile offshore drilling unit set of a chain of events that resulted in the loss of eleven mariners and the sinking and loss of the vessel. The Coast Guard was largely focused on rescue and response efforts, though a group of Coast Guard investigators worked with members of the Minerals Management Service to determine the cause of the disaster. A report of the results of their investigation was published in two volumes, the first looking at the events of the vessel and the second looking at subsea events and deepwater drilling.
