The Coastal State Exam
Activities in the Gulf of Mexico United States outer continental shelf (OCS) are increasing, as are activities in the Arctic. As a result, the Coast Guard is preparing for the challenges of increased volume and scope of OCS inspection oversight. The Coast Guard promotes and enforces safety and security regulations governing vessels and facilities operating in the OCS. Coast Guard marine inspectors verify that a mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) meets domestic requirements, and they issue certificates for compliant vessels. MODUs may not operate in the OCS without a Coast Guard inspection. The Coast Guard is working to amend its coastal state regulations in order to mitigate risk in the OCS and ensure that all vessels satisfy the same standards.
