Hydrogen Fueling Stations Infrastructure
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) can provide customers with the benefits of low to zero greenhouse gas emissions, high performance, and comfort without compromising range and refill time. With three major automakers (Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota) planning to introduce consumer FCEVs by the end of 2015, FCEVs will play an increasingly important role in the electric vehicle arena. Building hydrogen fueling infrastructure has been identified as a major obstacle in FCEV commercialization. This report is part of an ongoing effort within an Electric Vehicle Transportation Center (EVTC) project: “Fuel Cell Vehicle Technologies, Infrastructure and Requirements.” This report is based on a survey of recent literature on several key aspects of a hydrogen infrastructure: types of hydrogen fueling stations, station costs, station rollout strategy, and codes and standards. The majority of hydrogen infrastructure studies focus on California’s pioneering model of deploying and testing small fleets of FCEVs and demonstrational hydrogen fueling stations. Valuable lessons can be learned from California’s experiences and used by other states to plan and prepare for the challenges and opportunities that hydrogen transportation might bring.
