Optimising planning to support regional railways

The planning process for staff and rolling stock at Trenitalia (Italy's primary train operator)'s regional passenger business has been significantly accelerated by the introduction of resource management software. The complicated task of managing fleet, depot, staff and other assets - and balancing that with cost and quality - is best described as 'optimization,' and specialist information technology providers are increasingly assisting train operators with the process.
