Switching Suspenders

As part of recent rehabilitation efforts, the wire rope suspenders on the central span of the nearly 60-year-old Delaware River Turnpike Bridge were found to be in need of replacement because of their age, failed paint coatings, and the onset of corrosion. Whereas the existing suspender system comprised a single bridge rope 4 inches in diameter with clevis-style, single-pin connections at top and bottom support points, the replacement system used four wire strands held in place by new upper and lower brackets that were specially designed for installation in areas of limited clearance. Installed while the existing suspenders remained in place, the new system could be adjusted following installation to ensure proper load balancing and final deck elevations.
