VIABILITY OF A FREE TRANSPORT SYSTEM

THE ROLE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN URBAN AREAS IS EXAMINED. FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS SUGGESTED OPERATING AS A SELF- CONTAINED SERVICE IN A BUS PRIOITY AREA, IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF A TOWN OR CITY. THE BUS SERVICE COULD EVENTUALLY BE REPLACED BY A FIXED-TRACK SYSTEM. ROAD PRICING AND A PARKING POLICY CAN BE ENFORCED ON THE MOTORCAR. WHERE MAJOR RADICAL ROUTES MEET THE PERIMETER OF THE CENTRAL AREA, TRANSPORT INTERCHANGES, INCLUDING MULTI STOREY CAR PARKS, BUS STATIONS AND RAILWAY STATIONS COULD BE BUILT. THE ARTICLE ENDS WITH AN ATTEMPT TO APPLY THIS SYSTEM TO BIRMINGHAM, AND A DISCUSSION OF ITS EFFECTIVNESS IN THIS AREA. /RRL/
