RECENT AUTOMATIC DRIVING APPLICATIONS, IN THE PARIS UNDERGROUND

LES DERNIERS REALISATION DE LA R.A.T.P EM MATIERE DE PILOTAGE AUTOMATIQUE

The authors, who are respectively Assistant Chief Engineer, Research Department, and Chief Engineer, Rolling Stock Department, at the Paris Transport Authority (RATP), first describe traffic operating conditions in the underground which lend themselves well to automation and especially to automatic driving (identical trainsets and timings, close headway). The explain why the RATP has developed automatic driving, give the background of the tests begun in 1951, define the principles of the system, the line and train equipment, the various built-in safety devices, the sequence of operations from the start to the stop of the trainset at a predetermined point; they then refer to practical applications, as well as to the modifications made to present rolling stock and those envisaged in the future.
