FEASIBILITY OF AUTOMATED TRACTION: EXAMPLE OF SUBURBAN TRAINSET PROGRAMMED DRIVING

LES POSSIBILITIES D'AUTOMATISATION DE LA TRACTION

The author, who is Ingenieur Principal, SNCF Research Department, deals with "automatic driving" in this article. He explains the objectives sought by the railway which is by nature a guided means of transport and in this respect entirely different from aviation for example; he refers to the particular characteristics of the railway, its special constraints and explains the objectives pursued : fewer staff, increased safety and line capacity, higher speeds. He then gives details of the three possible automation systems (depending on the positioning of the control and decision organs), explains how the tractive unit is controlled in an automated system (primary driving automation linked with traffic conditions); he contnues by considering programmed train driving, various automated operations and describes an experimental application in the South Western Region; in conslusion, he refers to the promising results obtained which point to important savings in traction power consumption.
