PROGRESS WITH THE PC3 ENGINE
The test program for the S.E.M.T.-Pielstick medium-speed PC3 engine, with an initial rating of 850 bhp/cyl, is described. The first PC3 engine was put into service on the Saint Denis testbed in Oct 1967, and has so far completed 4500 running hr. The last 3000 hr of this period have been with the engine developing powers in the 900 to 950 bhp/cyl range. Details are given for--cylinder pressures when running on gas oil and heavy fuel; piston temperatures; component wear; manpower and hours needed for the main overhauling operations; and effects of sound-proof insulation.
