Design of Orthotropic Decks for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Self-Anchored Suspension Bridge

The special requirements of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay self-anchored suspension (SAS) bridge gave challenges in the design of the orthotropic decks. Many of the atypical details in this bridge are solutions to these unusual conditions. In the SFOBB-SAS, more than half the stress demand consists of axial dead load stress, the compression due to the main cable tension. Reinforcing for such stress is not simple, since adding material increases the dead load (DL) demands. Weight was reduced by the use of 14 mm decking and longer deck spans. Furthermore, as a bridge designed to resist extreme seismic demands, compactness and stability criteria apply for all longitudinal components of the deck. Testing of prototype decks was performed to confirm the design. The design criteria used in 2000 are compared with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Manual for the Design, Construction and Maintenance of Orthotropic Steel Deck Bridges (2012). The SAS design compares favorably with the current requirements.
