Dynamic Performance Evaluation of Through Type Arch Bridge for Moving Loads

The objective of the project is to study the dynamic response of bridges for moving vehicles. The time history method of dynamic analysis is used in this study where a nodal time history of vehicle load is obtained for different speeds with loaded and unloaded vehicle conditions. Road surface roughness characteristics are also incorporated in the analysis. It is attempted to carry out dynamic analysis by taking into account the realistic vehicle type having maximum frequency of using the bridge than other lighter or heavy vehicle classes as given in IRC. Input parameters are vehicle weight and its varying speed. In the detailed study, various stress level calculations, impact factor evaluation and fatigue life estimation are carried out. Finally, based on the evaluated results, retrofitting measures are suggested to improve the bridge performance to dynamic loading. The evaluated results have been verified with IRC codal provision and available literature.
