Planning more for sustainable mobility

This paper considers the role of urban planning, when well integrated with transport investment, in assisting in the transition to sustainable mobility. This is viewed largely in terms of reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) usage in transport. Sustainable transport futures are possible, but very difficult to achieve in terms of implementation. Urban planning is a critical element, as it allows a greater level of public transport usage, walking and cycling, and more localized trip patterns. Two case studies are examined, in London and Oxfordshire, and future strategies for urban form and transport investment strategies are developed showing the possibilities at various scales.
