Crash Test of Portable P.C.T.B. with Sign Support Assembly

This article focuses on the development and crash testing of a concrete traffic barrier (CTB)-mounted sign support assembly that can be incorporated into the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) standard specifications for signs used in construction zones. Details of a design developed for the sign support connection on top of a portable concrete traffic barrier (PCTB) and a description of the full-scale crash test performed on the sign support assembly are presented. Also presented is an assessment and evaluation of the performance of this assembly anchored to the top of the TxDOT Type 2 PCTB according to MASH specifications. The sign support and sign mount connection performed acceptably for MASH test 3-11. The steel straps added to the barrier connection at the sign mount connection minimized the intrusion of the vehicle over the barrier and helped minimize the roll of the vehicle over the barrier.
