CARBON MONOXIDE IN DETROIT, NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES AIR

STREET LEVEL CARBON MONOXIDE CONCENTRATIONS ARE COMPARED FOR 15 FREEWAY, COMMERCIAL, AND RESIDENTIAL SITES IN THREE MAJOR U. S. CITIES - LOS ANGELES (5), DETROIT (4), AND NEW YORK (6). ON WEEKENDS, CONCENTRATION AVERAGES WERE LOWER THAN FOR CORRESPONDING WEEKDAY CONCENTRATION AVERAGES. THE WEEKDAY-WEEKEND CO AVERAGES ARE 5.5-6 P.P.M. (DETROIT), 5.5-10.5 P.P.M. (NEW YORK), AND 6.5-9 P.P.M. (LOS ANGELES). GOOD CORRELATIONS WERE FOUND BETWEEN CO CONCENTRATION AVERAGES AND TRAFFIC DENSITY FOR DETROIT AND NEW YORK, WHILE LESS CLOSE CORRELATIONS WERE FOUND FOR LOS ANGELES. /AUTHOR/
