FREEWAY AND RAPID TRANSIT SHARE CORRIDOR

A TRAFFIC CORRIDOR EAST OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH A FREEWAY AND A TWIN-TRACK RAIL TRANSIT LINE. REDUCED COST, REDUCED RIGHT-OF-WAY, LESS TRAFFIC DISRUPTION DURING CONSTRUCTION, AND CONVENIENT ACCESS FOR LOCAL CITIZENS ARE PROVIDED BY THIS JOINT PLANNING. THE BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT FINANCES THE RELOCATION OF THE EXISTING WESTBOUND FREEWAY LANES AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TRANSIT TRACKS, ROADBED, AND STATIONS. THE DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS FINANCES THE BETTERMENTS WHICH EXTEND THE FREEWAY TO AN EVENTUAL EIGHT AND TEN LANES. THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF THIS JOINT-USE CORRIDOR IS DESCRIBED. CONSERVATION AND BEAUTY WERE INCLUDED IN THE PLANNING.
