5G Network Capacity: Key Elements and Technologies

Projections show that mobile traffic will increase on the order of 1,000 times in the next decade compared to what is experienced today. Next-generation mobile networks are expected to also achieve a 1,000-fold capacity increase in order to meet that dramatic traffic growth, compared to the current generation of wireless network deployments. The authors discuss how such a capacity growth could be achieved in a ten-year time frame. The authors discuss techniques that they expect will have the highest opportunity for increasing the system capacity and estimate their gains based on analysis and simulation. Observations are made by the authors that the main driver of capacity growth is expected to arise from network architecture achievements, with two of the key techniques being heterogeneous networks and convergence of information and communication technology. We also estimate that the air-interface evolution would focus on improving the link and system spectrum efficiency, as well as on facilitating the required network efficiency improvements. This article can be used as a guideline for technology development toward the fifth generation (5G), as it provides insights into the communication technology evolution.
