Cycle helmets and young people: a brief review of the evidence base
The review makes extensive use of systematic reviews published by the Cochrane Collaboration on cycle helmet effectiveness and cycle helmet legislation effectiveness. These reviews have been supplemented by more recent studies that address these questions. A range of databases have been searched for relevant literature, including Medline, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Google Scholar, TRIS and ERIC. This review has been conducted on the basis that a local authority has a role in advocating safe travel and that in doing this it can balance short term injury risks against longer term health outcomes such as heart disease that arise from inactive lifestyles.
