What Lies Beneath

There are many barriers to the full-scale adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in today’s society. The question to be answered is, how can these barriers be overcome? Inductive power transfer (IPT), the ability to charge wirelessly at high power levels and efficiency could be the key. The possibility of powering EVs using wireless technology represents a major step forward. This wireless power is being developed using the operating principle of transformers that consist of magnetically connected coils. One coil would be suspended below the vehicle and the other coil embedded in the road surface. Controlling the magnetic field generated on the transfer of energy in the free space between the two coils is a challenge. This article discusses how this new technology is being developed for both passenger vehicles and transit buses.
