Highway 26 New Wildlife Passage and Enhancements

The proposed alignment of Highway 26 would have severed a significant food source to a large population of deer in the area between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, Ontario. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation redesigned the originally planned culverts under Highway 26 New to provide deer and other wildlife a passage from the woods to the orchards. A simple refinement of a design that included the cul-de-sac relocation resulted in a complete wildlife passage system that has been very well utilized. The measures also contribute to the safety of the travelling public by helping avoid vehicle-wildlife collisions. This project was nominated for the TAC 2013 Environmental Achievement Award.
