Characterisation and fatigue life prediction of laser welded titanium

This project intends to further develop a digital x-ray technique with enhanced capacity in detection, sizing and positioning chain porosities in laser welded titanium. These chain porosities can have an impact on the structural integrity of the component and the project is focused on experimental work with the purpose to correlate defect information with indicators of structural integrity. A number of thin laser welded Ti plates will be investigated with the new x-ray system. Fatigue tests of objects with identified chain porosities will be made together with analysis using 3D LEFM.
