Electrification of heavy road transport

Background: There are currently more than 40 000 trolley buses in over 350 cities worldwide. Wire vehicles were common until the 1960's, when fossil-fueled vehicles took over the market. Main reasons was the zeitgeist, cheap oil, low investment and lack of knowledge about oil's impact on the environment. Today's environmental problems, the dwindling oil reserves and a large global demand means that the oil price within a few years might be significantly higher than today. Whether climate change is forcing us to reduce use of fossil fuels or that they simply run out so we must find alternatives. Purpose: Today there is no system for commercial use. The idea of electrified roads is to use proven, environmentally and robust technology and refine their use. Electric power emerges as a realistic alternative to oil in the short and medium term. The challenge is that electric vehicles represents a paradigm shift where large economic interests are at stake. Oil companies, vehicle manufacturers and the tax system is challenged. Elvägar combine rail's environmental performance and operating economy with road network availability and flexibility. The Swedish Transport Administration will support the Agency's project 33843-1 electrical paths with technical expertise in construction, maintenance and operation of road construction and also the expertise in electrical power. The project consists of two subprojects: - via overhead, - via the roadway.
