HyRange - Hybrid vehicle with a range extender in seriell/parallell installation, Part 2

This project is carried out at Volvo Cars with an ambition to develop a complete driveline based on an optimal combination of an electric engine and a combustion engine. A new engine based on Volvos scalable engine architecture will be used as a range extender in a powertrain that will be run on pure electric power up to a certain speed of the vehicle. By combining the high efficiency at high power of a combustion engine with the excellent efficiency of an electrical engine at low power demands it is possible to attain a powertrain that can reduce energy consumption to levels below 55g CO2 equivalent with a driving range and comfort level equal or superior to current DRIVe products. The project will mainly be carried out at VCC. Parts of the project will be carried out in collaboration with Chalmers. In this part we will study methods to optimize efficiency and control strategies for the complete powertrain.
