FRAMLAST - Development of Intermodal Cargo Transport Units (P90

The project will compile requirements on the Cargo Transport Unit (CTU) which different types of cargo, transport modes, ways of handling and administration etc. have on the CTU in an intermodal chain of transports. Also requirements from sea transport will be included. The main issue will be transport quality and handling of CTUs between different modes of transport. The project will start in an opened minded way and in a first step develop new concepts of intermodal CTUs. In following step also actual CTUs as semi-trailer, swap-body and freight containers will be investigated to get their strong and weak points and if some changes in the design are required to be developed to make the intermodal transport further more easily. The different proposals of changes of actual CTUs could be used as an input for the next revision of standard EN 12642. Limited tests of technical solution can be made within in the project and if the result is promising next step in a coming project is to develop a prototype of CTU for full scale tests and demonstration of solutions. Project plan The project is divided in four steps: Step 1: Requirements on the CTU in an intermodal transport for different type of cargo, mode of transport etc. is compiled from experiences from earlier projects and in additional interviews with different cargo owners, transporters and manufacturers of CTUs. Also earlier developed concepts of CTUs from other projects will be compiled. Step 2: Concepts of CTU to fulfil as many requirements from step 1 as possible is developed and analyzed. Step 3: Analysis of actual CTUs. The current CTUs are compared to the list of requirements from step 1 to see which requirements the different CTUs can fulfil. Thereafter proposal of changes is developed for the actual CTUs to better fulfil requirements from the intermodal chain of transport. Limited test of proposed changes on actual CTUs can be performed. Step 4: Cost and benefit analysis of the different proposals and concepts is done. The project will be summarised in two major parts. The first part is a proposal to a coming demo project and a second part is a proposal of changes of actual CTU as an input for the next revision of standard EN 12642. Expected result of the project: The result of the project will one or several concepts of CTUs or proposal of changes on actual CTUs which better fulfil requirements from different kind of cargo and modes of transport in an intermodal transport chain, especially concerning transport quality and handling of CTUs between different modes of transport. This can make it easier for the cargo owners to choose intermodal transport solutions instead of pure road transports. The public interest is to decrease the pure road transports and instead increase combinations of road, rail and sea transports.
