Optimization of track switches

The objective of the project is to develop a method for optimization of geometry and stiffness of track switches in order to reduce dynamic wheel–rail contact forces and contact stresses. Examples of design variables are rail profiles, rail inclination, stiffnesses of elastic layers (such as rail pads and under sleeper pads), and switch panel variation in track gauge. In particular, the method will account for the stochastic distributions (scatter) of uncontrollable load parameters such as worn wheel profiles, train speeds, axle loads and wheel–rail friction. Numerical models for simulation of dynamic interaction between train and track switch that have been developed in the previous CHARMEC project TS7 “Dynamics of track switches” will be used. The optimization will be based on methods for robust design.
