Development of an asset management framework for rollingstock

This paper describes the development of an Asset Management framework for Rollingstock at United Group Rail. The underlying principles and approaches are explained and descriptions provided of the individual projects underway, as examples of how the AM framework is being developed and used. The paper is authored by two senior United Group Rail staff with different backgrounds and perspectives on the asset management approach. With the aim of linking United Group Rail?s business functions together, this Asset Management framework provides methods by which intellectual assets of the company are defined, relative to core business activities. It helps to identify value-adding opportunities that United Group Rail can present to its customers. The Asset Management framework provides a change agenda for the organisation to improve the way that intellectual property is developed and managed. The paper provides a basis for benchmarking with other companies involved in any part of the rail industry.
