Condition-based maintenance using an integrated track maintenance management system

Controlling and planning of railway Maintenance and Renewal (M&R) activities involves several highly interrelated aspects such as Infrastructure Monitoring, Railroad Engineering and Information Systems. This necessitates accurate analyses of the maintenance requirements in order to introduce a Track Maintenance Information System for supporting the maintenance management. At Rio Tinto Iron Ore, introduction of a new Track Maintenance Information System, named TIMS (RAMSYS) is an ongoing project. RAMSYS (Railway Asset Management SYStem) - a system designed and developed by MER MEC (www.mermec.it) - effectively integrates the functionalities of several currently existing systems to ensure the Track Maintenance team has the right data and tools to make critical decisions on how track maintenance is scheduled, undertaken and managed for Rio Tinto Iron Ore. The objective of the TIMS project is to enable more efficient management of track maintenance information from multiple sources in a single system. The paper will first discuss in general the issues involved in the usage of an information system for condition based track maintenance, then it will describe the scope of the TIMS (RAMSYS) project and the expected outcomes with Rio Tinto Iron Ore, as well as approaches taken and key results to date.
