Trams make a comeback

The first tram network to be built in mainland China in many decades was inaugurated in 2013. The precedent that was set when a build-transfer agreement was signed to build a four-line network in Shenyang Dongling District is likely to be closely watched by many other cities where plans are underway for tram networks that will serve new town areas. A tram system can be built, according to official estimates, for between one-quarter to one-eighth the cost of a metro in half the time. Other plans for trams in China are detailed in this article.
