BULK CARRIER WITH SELF-UNLOADING GEAR
This bulk carrier of 48,970 dwt, specially designed for the transport of bauxite, has self-unloading equipment and is the largest of this type yet constructed. A steam turbine gives the ship a speed in excess of 17 knots. The self-unloading plant comprises several conveyors, which receive the ore from under the holds and carry it to the end of the ship/ the boom conveyor then discharges it to a shore receiving conveyor system. The cargo holds slope downwards to a number of small chutes, each of which can be closed by a gate, actuated hydraulically, with a four-position valve to give the desired discharge rate. Principal particulars are given, with details of general arrangement, hull, cargo facilities, machinery and ventilation system.
