OIL POLLUTION: WHAT'S AVAILABLE TO CONTROL AND PREVENT SPILLS

A number of international, federal and state water pollution control laws are threatening to significantly increase both ship operating and construction costs. Several of the major pollution control laws are listed with the provisions of the laws also given. Various methods of containing and recovering oil that has been spilled on the water are described, as are methods of pollution prevention, which would clean the waste effluent being discharged from ships into a material that would not damage the ocean environment. A list of manufacturers and distributors of equipment and materials to contain, treat and recover oil spills and discharges is included in the article.
