Railway mechanisation in NSW 1957-1977

The seed of Mechanisation in New South Wales began with the EBASCO Study of the Department of Railways and Department of Government Transport. This report was printed on 5th November 1957, for the New South Wales Parliament. At the time EBASCO was a leading US based engineering and construction company. Extracts from the EBASCO report recommended that the track maintenance be mechanised. The report also recommended changes to the Railway Workshops, the elimination of horses, (and hence the Inspector of Horses), cutting train lengths of passenger trains in off peak period and consolidation of Mechanical Branch Workshops.
