Cane railways: strategies for survival in a hostile market and environment

The effects of low world sugar prices coupled with the effect of five years of below average rainfall has forced sugar mills to focus more intensely on both short and medium term savings. To achieve this, several strategies commonly seen in larger gauge railway systems both in Australia and overseas have been adopted to the sometimes unique environment in which cane railways operate. The illustrations below show some of these strategies.
