Concrete re-sleepering on the SIA

This paper outlines the process undertaken in the planning and delivery of the program of works for the concrete re-sleepering of approximately 1.6 million sleepers on the Melbourne to Sydney “Main South” rail corridor as part of the South Improvement Alliance. The South Improvement Alliance (SIA) is a ‘Program of Works’ on the interstate standard gauge rail network between Melbourne and Sydney under an Alliance style contract with ATRC, John Holland, MVM and O’Donnell Griffin. The works involve a series of discrete packages; one of these packages is concrete re-sleepering between Melbourne and Sydney. The concrete re-sleepering program of works for the SIA consists of replacing all of the remaining sections of timber sleepered track from Melbourne to Sydney. This requires replacement of approximately 1,600,000 concrete sleepers. The indicative budget estimate for the work overall being $277 million, which equates to approximately $167 per sleeper.
