ERTMS: implementations in Europe, planned further developments

Since more than 15 years, the European Railways and Industry are making a huge effort with support of the EU for realising the new concept ERTMS with the harmonised Train Control System ETCS and the new digital radio System GSM-R. After phases of study and specification, prototyping, tests and pilot applications, the roll-out has now started. The author gave in November 1999 for Ausrail a presentation “Analysis of applying the ETCS to the Australian situation”. In the mean-time, several ETCS and GSM-R project have been launched also outside Europe, especially in Asia and Australia. This paper gives an overview on the legal base for ERTMS in Europe, the concept and of ETCS with its three application levels, the current status of implementations in Europe and the trends for further development.
