Mobilising for cashless payment

The use of smartphones among the general public is on the rise. In the public transportation sector, smartphones can be used with mobile near field communications (NFC) and branded applications to pay fares and check balances and transaction histories. Pilot programs and implementation using this technology have been launched in a number of countries around the world. Some transportation agencies, however, are remaining cautious about NFC, since not all transport users have smartphones, and not all smartphones have NFC capabilities. NFC can improve passenger convenience and can speed up boarding time, leading to cost savings. The use of NFC is growing around the world.
